29th & 30th November - Welsh Winter Fair

According to an online survey following last year's Winter Fair 17.5% of respondents said that shopping for Christmas gifts was one of the main reasons for their visit to the event, so with just over three weeks to go to Christmas and with some 300 trade stands to choose from shopping will be high on the agenda for many visitors.

The Fair's popular produce and handicrafts section, flower arranging, antiques, art, fashion, cosmetics, clothing and demonstrations of various activities are all part of the two-day programme which includes a hound show and a championship status poultry show (Tuesday) with around 1000 birds exhibited.

The Food Hall, providing top quality food and drink produced in Wales, was an attraction not to be missed and the event culminated Tuesday with the sale of livestock which will be attended by buyers from across the UK.

10th September - Kelso Ram Sales

The first Ram Sale was held in the Knowes in Kelso ( now a car park ) in 1836 when the Society acted as arbiters to private bargaining before the first sale by auction in 1838 when 120 rams were offered, at prices ranging from three to six pounds per head.

The next significant date was 1850 when the railway came to Kelso, which paved the way for flockmasters from far afield to sell at the Sales. In 1851 652 rams were offered. The Sales grew in size, quality and reputation and in 1993 broke the two million pound barrier when 6000 tups changed hands. The numbers have evened out and in 1999 6013 tups were sold. There are between five and six hundred consignors from all over the United Kingdom and Eire. In the last few years rams have been exported to three EU countries, Holland, Germany and Eire, confirming the Ram sales as the biggest and most famous one day sale of rams in the world.
